THE HONOREES

TOM FORD: THE VISIONARY

“I started this Prize three years ago with a harrowing fear that the world our children would inherit would no longer be a livable one,” said Ford. “I wanted to be a part of the solution, not be an arbiter of the problem. Watching the brilliant minds within this competition has given me extraordinary hope in making the impossible possible. Our three winners have createdruly viable alternatives – alternatives that when scaled across markets and industries drastically change the course of the health of our planet. I am honored to have such great willminds and partners join me to pioneer change.”

SÔNIA GUAJAJARA, BRAZIL MINISTER FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE: THE HEALER

PRESENTED BY LEONARDO DI CAPRIO

For her extraordinary achievements in upholding the rights of forests and helping to reposition Indigenous people central in the global climate agenda and for her dedication to protecting and regenerating the Amazon rainforest biome.

“It is a joy and honor to receive this important award, which recognizes the struggle, which is not just mine, but that of millions of defenders of nature, animals and life on planet Earth! This fight has not been easy, many comrades and companions have lost their lives daily. Indigenous peoples make up only 5% of the world's population, but together we protect the equivalent of 80% of the planet's biodiversity. Therefore, recognition and an award as important as this one is essential for this cause to be seen and recognized by many different people. Because the fight for the indigenous cause is a humanitarian fight. By protecting the environment and indigenous territories, we also manage to protect life on the planet, the air and water we breathe and drink here on this side of the world, which also comes from these territories. Now, as Brazil's first Minister of Indigenous Peoples, I will expand this fight for protection and justice for our people, who have been viciously attacked for centuries! Partnership with other countries is fundamental for us to gain more strength in this humanitarian fight. So thank you Green Carpet Fashion Awards, thank you Leonardo DiCaprio.”

SÔNIA GUAJAJARA, BRAZIL MINISTER FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

“Minister Guajajara’s pivotal role within President Lula’s government gives her even greater responsibility and an unprecedented opportunity for impact. Although the task ahead is undoubtedly daunting – in Minister Guajajara’s words, "the fight for mother earth is the mother of all fights" – her strong leadership position coupled with her commitment and tenacity fills me with boundless hope that she will rise to the occasion yet again.”

GABRIELA HEARST: THE SAGE

PRESENTED BY MIKE D

For her tireless pursuit to reshape the fashion industry by seeking our nature rewilding, indigenous creative leaders and creates products and marketplaces for people and designers who are traditionally overlooked.

“Things for us to get us into climate success. One, is we need the limitations of the geopolitical lines where we're not commoditizing our planet anymore. The oceans have been subsidising the global economy. Number two, we need clean energy because as long as we don't have abundant clean energy, and we use 80% of the world's fossil fuels to move this world we're working we're walking into doom. So, my belief is in fusion energy. Third, the empowerment of women. If we do not have women in power positions, either C-Suite positions, CEOs, boardrooms, we all need women because when we lift, we lift all of us up. Four, this is where the community can help with the change of consciousness. We need to change and observe the way we think, our brain still moves in the hunter and gatherers days. The reactions that we do, they're not perfect for the times that we need. So, let's observe each other. Thank you so much. Thank you for my Sage Award. I'm so excited.

EDWARD ENNINFUL: THE GCFA GAME CHANGER HONOR

PRESENTED BY JODIE TURNER-SMITH

Edward Enninful has raised debate and the global dialogue around fashion. He has used his history and lived experience courageously and dedicates himself to knowledge, empowerment, and passing the mic (or camera) to those who have previously been excluded, fetishized, or marginalized.

Edward’s ability to center diversity and explorations of front-line workers, LGBTQ stars, climate activists, and more have seen him carry the messages of future-facing sustainability to a huge global audience. He doesn’t just create stories, he shows how they are interconnected and in a world where fashion is marketplace driven, this is nothing short of a revolution.

“What an honour to not only be receiving this award, but to be here with you all this evening on this very special occasion. I have always endeavoured to use my platform to champion causes that hopefully leave this world a better place than how we found it. It’s been my life’s mission to spotlight, improve and drive the stories of the underrepresented. Understanding and effectively communicating how sustainability is intrinsically part of this story is so important, and truly changes lives. The progress we have made as a culture and fashion community in recent years has been fantastic, but we can do more. We must do more. I feel humbled to be amongst the people here tonight who will continue to make this transformative journey happen.”

EDWARD ENNINFUL, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF BRITISH VOGUE

And if we accept what we know is wrong...just because it’s what everyone else is doing, we won’t ever change. I want to thank all of the amazing people fighting for our earth with their forks, and all of the warriors out there fighting big Pharma and corporate farming and for protecting our precious home we call earth.
